Is it a Standard or an auto? If Standard is it a 4 or 5 speed?

It is a T-5 then. Made by Borg-Wagner. It is a middle of the road trans, medium duty. The T-176 is bit better if you want to swap it out for one built already. The T-176 is a 4 speed and so is the SR4. STAY AWAY from the SR4.

Yes he can. Not that hard to do. The easiest is a TF909 or 904. Both are good transmissions and will mount to the 258 and D300 tcase. An AMC th400 is perfect but requires an Advanced adapters adapter for the Tcase to bolt on. A 727 is good too but has a large offset pan that will get in the way of the driveshaft at times. i have done a few TF909s and it is perfect and they can be found pretty cheap.

You usually do not need to rebuild a T-176. They were capable of some pretty high HP and Torque. You can put one behind a V8 and never have a problem. Just gotta search for one. Ebay, GL, Offroad forums... Put out a want add. What do you have in yours? A t-4?

Don't really know , making a noise when the clutch is down and I put it in gear, not a grinding noise, maybe best described as a zinging type noise. Stops as soon as it grabs when I let the clutch out. Just don't want it to go out 60 miles down PINS or in the middle of big bend. So starting to look into the problem, maybe a rebuild or replace. Preventative maintenance. Saw this and just figured I probably have the same tranny. Any thoughts.

Could be a dried and fried pilot. Maybe even the clutch worn in a spot or the throw out. May not be the trans at all but hard to tell without driving it. i would pull it and do it all if it has not been done in a while.

New clutch kit, replaced in April , clutch plate broke July 4 at PINS, replaced whole kit again. Same noise with both clutches. not constant, just every now and then.

Replaced fly wheel, I dont know, maybe it's just a normal noise I'll have to deal with. No one seems to know what it is. Im headed to Big Bend the first part of November, Key West the end of November. Then we are going to drive the PCH from Southern California to Washington sometime after that. I just really want to make sure the transmission is in good shape and not gonna leave me stranded. But I guess the only way to really find out is see if I make it. Still puzzles me why a brand new clutch plate broke from driving on the sand.

Well if the pilot was trashed in there, it can cause the fly wheel to slap the clutch. Happened in my last one and put crack all over it. The problem to me does not sound like a transmission problem. Sounds like a clutch, throwout, or pilot bearing/bushing problem. That is were i would start.
