I installed my new Master-Pull 5/16" X 100' LCP Synthetic Winch Line. Before I could Spool it up I had to do a few things to the Winch and the Bumper.... First I uninstalled the Winch The Drum Surface was Rough and Rusty from the Steel Cable I removed these 3 Bolts to get the Drum out a little filthy broken drum seal I cleaned everything up and out as best I could w/o disassembling the whole winch. Next I sanded the Drum with 400 & 600 grit sanding paper to get it all smooth and to remove the rust. After sanding and cleaning I gave it a few coats of Red Engine Enamel. While the Paint was drying, I started working on the Front Bumper. Note the Rust and sharp edges made by the Steel Wire Rope

I sanded all the rusty areas and sharp edges and put a bevel on the edges of the Fairlead Slot and finished it all up with 600 grit sand paper. Then I touched up the Bumper where needed with some black Rustoleum. I should have used matte but glossy was the only thing handy. It was time to install the new Aluminum Hawse Fairlead...of course nothing is ever easy; I had to grind of the bolts and nuts on the back to make the Winch fit. I used some Valvoline Synthetic High Pressure grease to re-grease the gears and then reassembled the Winch. After installing the Winch I could wire it up and spool up the new Winch Line Master-Pull still owes me the Rock Guard that was supposed to come with the Line but didn't... I will have to take the Winch out again soon to replace all the seals, give it a thorough cleaning and give it some new grease.

Great write up. I am not ready to change my wire winch line to synthetic line at this time, but liked how you painted the drum. I'll have to revisit this thread when I will make the change.
